“1949” is a big budget, romance-drama film based on a true, heart-breaking love story that happened during the final years of Chinese Civil War and World War II.
The movie’s main characters will be portrayed by Taiwanese actor, Chen Chang (popular in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon & Red Cliff) and South Korean actress, Song Hye Kyo (popular in Autumn in my Heart, Full House, Hwang Jini).
Song will play as a widow who lost his husband during the war and becomes involved with a man played by Chang. It will be directed by the famous Asian & Hollywood film director, John Woo, who worked on the movies – “Hard Boiled”, “Face Off”, “Mission Impossible II”, “A Better Tomorrow”, “Broken Arrow” and many others.
Woo seemed to tone down a bit from making action-packed movies showing chopped heads and raining bullets. He said that out of all the movies he made, this one is different because it focuses on humanity, it depicts true love. He personally chose Song to be one of the main casts as he was impressed by her acting in “Hwang Jini”. Song, on the other hand, is delighted to work with director Woo. She received a casting call for the movie early this year and found the script to be compelling.
The movie’s production was announced at a press conference during the International Canne’s Film Festival held in Hotel Majestic last June 20, 2009. The movie is planned to be shown in theatres this December 2009.
It will also be presented for the 60th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Terence Chang of Lion Rock Production and Fortissimo Films has the worldwide rights to release the film outside China.
