Acclaimed Korean director Jang Jin has again created a stir in the recently concluded Pusan International Film Festival with his latest offering, Good Morning President which only took minutes to sell out on its initial festival screening on October 8, 2009. It tells the story of three fictitious South Korean presidents with very distinct personalities, all torn between politics and personal ethics.
Cast in the this film is Lee Soon-jae as the outgoing and elderly populist president, Kim Jong-ho who was described as a 50-year political arena veteran and projects himself like an average Joe trying his luck on the state lottery. Joining him are Jang Dong-gun who plays Cha Ji-uk, the bachelor cum JFK-esque president, a Korean take on Hugh Grant’s Love Actually prime minister role, and Ko Doo-sim, who portrays the feisty first female president, Han Gyeong-ja. This movie was re-released on October 22, 2009 for public screening in South Korea. However, there is no word as of yet whether this film will be scheduled for international release.
The film’s director, Jang Jin has been regarded as a pioneer of Korean cinema renaissance in the 1990’s and is noted for his style of mixing humor, drama and social commentary in his works like cult favorite, Guns and Talk, and Something Special.
